Mud Bay Community Shows Tons of Love to Neighborhood Shelters

Annual Holiday Giving Delivered to Animal Shelters

Shelter Partners |  February 18, 2019

From the day after Thanksgiving until New Year’s Eve, Mud Bay, our customers and a select group of manufacturing partners band together to raise money and food for our amazing animal welfare organizations in the Pacific Northwest.

Our 2018 Tons of Love campaign raised $70,032.67 from Giving Tree gifts and an additional $14,000 in Santa photo donations. In addition to the $15,000 Mud Bay donated, we also received donations from these manufacturers:

  • Taplow: 2,200 pounds of food
  • TAIGA: 350 pounds of food
  • Champion: 1,228 pounds of food
  • Open Farm: 10,000 pounds of food
  • World’s Best Cat Litter: 5,000 pounds of litter
  • Instinct: $5,000 donation
  • Earth Animal: $3,800 donation

Overall, we’ve donated 10.5 tons of food to animals in need, along with supplies, money, and litter in 2019.

Every year, we’re incredibly grateful and touched by how our community bands together to help animal rescues get a head start for the new year. We thought you would like to hear how your generous giving helped shelters in need. This year, we decided to follow what happened to the World’s Best Cat Litter donated as part of the Tons of Love program this year.

World’s Best Cat Litter to West Columbia Gorge Humane Society in Washougal, Washington

David Uhrich, Regional Sales Specialist Northwest, World’s Best Cat Litter

West Columbia Gorge Humane Society in Washougal, Washington holds a special place in my heart. Several years ago, my wife organized a service project with children from her church, collecting donations of pet supplies and pet food for WCGHS. I helped them deliver the items and got to see first-hand the work this shelter does for animals in need.

Not long ago a friend of mine called after seeing an article mentioning that WCGHS was in need of cat litter and asked if I was able to make any donation to the shelter. I loaded up my car and delivered several bags of litter to them right away. Needless to say, when I heard that WCGHS could benefit from the ‘Tons of Love’ campaign I was eager to help again.

When we delivered the litter everyone at WCGHS looked overwhelmed and grateful for the large donation. There were many people from Mud Bay onsite to help unload the truck, which was great because there was 2,000 pounds of cat litter!

World’s Best sets aside a certain amount of cat litter to donate to shelters across the nation on a quarterly basis. We were pleased to be able to make this donation to West Columbia Gorge Humane Society, and personally, I was very happy to be a part of such a rewarding day.

Megan Collins, Director of Operations, West Columbia Gorge Humane Society

Most of our support comes from individual and corporate donations, as well as adoption fees, grants, sponsorships and other fundraisers. Getting a donation of litter helps us put money towards animal medical expenses, which is one of our biggest challenges.

We were so happy to see David and a group of Muddies arrive with a literal ton of cat litter! We provide litter to our foster homes, and we’re hoping that the litter delivered in April will last for the next three months. It’s always such a gift to get a high-quality litter because it increases the chances that the cats will use that litter and won’t reject the box.

The need in Southwest Washington is always increasing. In 2017, we adopted 482 pets and 401 were cats. By 2018, that number had increased to 560 pets, with 455 cats adopted. We’re hoping to expand our capacity to 1,000 animals within the next two years, and it’s gifts like World’s Best Cat Litter that helps us work towards our goals.

World’s Best Cat Litter to Seattle Area Feline Rescue in Shoreline, Washington

Jackie Rockseth, Regional Sales Specialist Westcoast, World’s Best Cat Litter:

We donate to numerous rescues and shelters throughout the United States through our “Give Litter Program”.

Mud Bay approached my manager and me about the possibility of donating to the Tons of Love litter program and of course we agreed to participate. When I found out that the delivery would be given to the Seattle Area Feline Rescue in Shoreline, I was happy to attend the donation delivery and get to see firsthand what the program does and who receives it.

I was very impressed with this rescue group and the work they do and also how the Mud Bay staff (with the help of the customers!) made it all happen.

World’s Best always looks for ways to give back to the animal welfare community and we were so happy to partner with Mud Bay for the Tons of Love program this year! Thank you, Mud Bay, for allowing us to take part in this wonderful program!

Shelley Lawson, Development and Communications Director, Seattle Area Feline Rescue:

Last year, Seattle Area Feline Rescue found homes for 1740 cats, so, as you can imagine, we use a lot of litter. The Tons of Love program really impressed us: It’s not often you get a whole truck full of cat litter delivered to your door, and it’s especially awesome to get a high-quality brand like Word’s Best.

Cat litter is one of our most purchased supplies, so having it helps us care for more kitties. We’re planning on giving it to foster homes who are caring for our cats. Being able to give these foster homes a high-quality litter will help cats new to foster homes use the litterbox. It also helps our foster families to have all the supplies they need to take care of the kitties.

Having everything we need to run our foster program makes a huge difference, especially because we’re heading into kitten season. Our foster homes are gearing up to take even more kitties in the next few months.

People may not realize that our adoption fee only funds about a third of what it costs to run Seattle Area Feline Rescue. To do the work that we do, we absolutely rely on community support. We rely on incredible businesses like Mud Bay and World’s best, as well as individuals who are willing to help. In addition to the funds and products we receive, we also rely on the donations of time from our foster families and from our volunteers. It’s really a community effort that makes it possible to help these kitties that deserve homes.***

Shepherds from the Basque region of Spain first took their dogs with them to Australia and then to the United States. The Basques’ herding dogs were greatly admired by California ranchers who assumed they were an Australian breed!
