UW and WSU Are Looking for Participants for a Study About Pets and COVID-19

Yakima and King County Pet Owners Encouraged to Apply

If you’re a pet owner who was diagnosed with COVID-19 and who lives King or Yakima County, you may be able to help scientists learn more about coronavirus transmission between people and pets.

The University of Washington and Washington State University are looking for study participants who own a dog, cat, ferret or hamster and had at least one member of the household diagnosed and confirmed positive with COVID-19. Potential participants must live in King or Yakima County.

Curious if you qualify? You can visit the University of Washington website for more information. Researchers will contact eligible participants and a veterinarian will come to each participant’s home and test all animals who live there.

We think this is an important opportunity to learn more about COVID-19 and how our pets could be affected during this global pandemic. Our in-house veterinarian, Dr. Katy Miller, is in close contact with the researchers, and she’s hoping helpful citizens will help get the word out, so UW and WSU can get enough participants to do their valuable research.

So, if you know anyone who qualifies, please direct them to this survey to sign up!

Just a reminder: The FDA and CDC both agree that pets cannot transmit COVID-19 to humans, but humans can transmit the disease to pets. To protect your pets from catching the coronavirus, minimize contact with them and wear a mask if you have any COVID-19 symptoms. Also, avoid crowded public places and keep your pets at least six feet away from other pets and people.

A time of silence, in solidarity: 8 minutes, 46 se A time of silence, in solidarity: 8 minutes, 46 seconds, please join us!

To stand in solidarity today, June 4, we will temporarily close our doors for a moment of silence in recognition of George Floyd’s funeral. From 12:30 PM-1:00 PM, we are participating in a period of silence--specifically, 8 minutes, 46 seconds, starting at 12:45:00 PST through 12:53:46 PST. This time is to recognize a call for a National Day of Mourning and honor the life of George Floyd and countless other Black and POC citizens who have suffered violence as a result of discrimination and systemic oppression. This is an opportunity for us to stand together, continue this call for solidarity, and reflect on and recognize our own work within this movement.

Taking these minutes reflects our commitment to the work that lies ahead to address centuries of systemic racism in our country. We, as a company and a group of owners, recognize that this single event, in and of itself, is not enough. Muddies--including Mud Bay’s Exec Team and our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee--are engaging in tough, vulnerable conversations to understand our part in this long journey. We value every Muddy’s engagement in supporting one another and helping to make Mud Bay a more diverse, equitable and inclusive company. https://ecs.page.link/Gpprj
